Man learning how he can care for his dentures

If you have chosen to get modern dentures to replace your missing teeth, you may be well aware of their many benefits. They may help you feel more confident and let you have an easier time eating your favorite foods, but it’s important to care for them properly. They are your new smile after all, so here is what you can do to clean them and ensure they stay the best they can be.

1.)  Clean Your Dentures at Least Once a Day

When it’s time to dig into your meals, you may know how food can still get stuck in your teeth. The same thing happens to dentures, so you will need to take some time to remove any morsels left behind. Not doing so can lead to stains or a buildup of plaque that can attack your gums.

Thankfully, cleaning them is a simple process. If you have a denture brush or a soft-bristled toothbrush handy, then you can use that with clear, gentle hand soap to remove bacteria. While it’s recommended to do this at least once every day, it’s even better to do this twice daily! There may be some cases where you don’t have your usual cleaning items nearby, so running them under lukewarm water and using your fingers can be an option in a pinch.

While you are doing this, the materials can make your dentures feel slippery, so you may want to lay down a cloth or towel to act as a cushion.

2.)  Soak Your Dentures at Night

Since this tooth replacement option is meant to sit over your gums, the materials used are meant to stay moist. This helps them keep their shape, but it’s not the best idea to wear them 24/7. Doing so can cause bacteria buildup or sores, so you will need to remove them during the night.

It’s important to place this prosthetic into a glass of water or a denture-soaking solution. This will help prevent them from drying out and cracking! In the morning, be sure to rinse them before popping them back in.

3.)  Understand How Dentures Are Supposed to Fit

Your mouth will change over time. This can affect the fit of your dentures, making them feel looser than before. When you notice that they are no longer snug, you risk getting sores or slippage while you eat or talk. It’s best to head to your dentist right away to get them relined and give you a stable bite.

Remember these three simple tips for caring for your renewed smile. Doing so can help you keep them protected for years to come. You can enjoy your new teeth that give you the confidence to laugh and eat with those around you once again.
