According to the American Dental Association, 91% of Americans over age 20 have had at least one cavity. Pigmented staining and small pits are common signs of tooth decay, but how can you tell if you have cavities between your teeth? Since this issue can lead to a range of issues, like problems chewing and persistent bad breath, read on to learn how to know if you have cavities between your pearly whites as well as how to treat and prevent them.

How to Tell If You Have a Cavity Between Your Teeth

Interproximal cavities, which are the ones between your teeth, don’t usually have visible indicators until they’ve developed further. For that reason, there are only two ways to know if you have one. The first is new tooth sensitivity. This happens when decay penetrates the enamel and makes its way into the inner tissue of the tooth, which is called the dentin. Any discomfort that stems from consuming hot or cold foods or beverages means you should make an appointment to see your dentist.

The second way to determine if you have cavities between your teeth is by visiting your dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning. By taking X-rays, they will be able to identify cavities that would have otherwise gone unnoticed.

Effective Treatments for Interproximal Cavities

If your dentist finds cavities between your teeth, they will develop a custom treatment plan to get rid of them without disrupting the look or function of your smile. Depending on how severe the decay is, they will recommend a dental filling, a root canal, a dental crown, or a tooth extraction. Regardless of which one you end up getting, your dental team will do whatever they can to ensure that the experience is as straightforward, comfortable, and seamless as possible.

5 Ways to Prevent Tooth Decay

Though there are several ways that your dentist can repair cavities between your teeth, it’s best to avoid them in the first place. A few methods of prevention that will help you keep your smile cavity-free include:

  • Brush – Twice per day for two minutes, brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Floss – Flossing is the most effective way to remove plaque from between your teeth, so do this at least twice per day to lessen your risk of cavities.
  • Eat well – Limit your sugar consumption and eat a dentist-approved diet of fresh fruits and veggies, low-fat and fat-free dairy products, fish, and lean meat.
  • Cut out bad dental habits – Things like tobacco use and drinking alcohol in excess should be cut out to prevent damage to your smile.
  • Visit your dentist – Every six months, make an appointment to see your dentist for a dental checkup and cleaning.

Though interproximal cavities can wreak havoc on your oral health, the above tips can help keep them at bay. This way, you can maintain a healthy, happy smile for years to come!
